Job offer: Research Technician


The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institute addressing global public health challenges through research, translation into policy and education. ISGlobal has a broad portfolio in communicable and non-communicable diseases including environmental and climate determinants, and applies a multidisciplinary scientific approach ranging from the molecular to the population level. Research is organized in three main areas, Malaria and other Infectious Diseases, Child and Maternal Health, and Urban Health, Climate & Non-Communicable Diseases.  ISGlobal is accredited with the Severo Ochoa distinction, a seal of excellence of the Spanish Science Ministry.





What We Are Looking for

ISGlobal is seeking a Research Technician who is interested in supporting activities in several projects under the Urban Planning, Environment and Health Initiative. The overall project is to translate evidence into practice to generate impact in society and policy and contribute to healthy, sustainable and just cities. 
The UPEH currently has multiple research projects, that examine how to improve health through interventions in schools around Barcelona and through development of tools, and translation of scientific evidence for diverse audiences. The Research Technician will support these projects through diverse activities, including fieldwork, working closely with project leaders and the initiative coordinator. 
One of these projects is ATHLETE (Advancing Tools for Human Early Lifecourse Exposome Research and Translation) project. ATHLETE project has received funding from H2020 (grant agreement 874583) and aims to implement the exposome in birth cohorts in order to study the effects of a wide range of community-level and individual-level environmental risk factors on mental, cardiometabolic, and respiratory health outcomes and associated biological pathways during the first 2 decades of life. Technician will be involved in the school intervention study that is being conducted. 
Protegim les escoles is a project being conducted with the Ajuntament of Barcelona to evaluate the impacts on air pollution and use and perception of  public space as the result of structural interventions around the streets of primary schools in Barcelona. ISGlobal is conducting the analysis including data collection and analysis. The technician will participate in all facets of this project. 
Together with the Barcelona Regional Government (DIBA), ISGlobal has had an ongoing collaboration as part of the Entorns Urbà i Salut Programme. Each year projects are co-selected and designed to identify opportunities to include health evidence into urban planning and management. The current focus for 2022-2023 is on the new Plans de transformació de barris. ISGlobal is contributing to this process through the revision and presentation of health evidence and indicators. ISGlobal also contributes to monthly articles about urban health topics. The technician will provide support to these activities.

Training and experience /Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in environmental or biological sciences
  • Experience in fieldwork, fieldwork coordination support, data collection, data entry and descriptive analysis 
  • Literature searches and synthesis of information 
  • Experience with design and preparation of presentations is valued

  • Willingness to travel to research sites (in Barcelona)
  • High level of English, Catalan and Spanish are required

Key Responsibilities

  • Support all aspects of research projects within the Urban Planning, Environment and Health Initiative
  • Work with project coordinators to ensure timely accomplishment of project´s objectives and deliverables

Specific Duties

  • Participate in data collection, management and analysis for various projects in schools in Barcelona (Protegim les Escoles, Athlete), and collaborations with other cities
  • Participate in writing fieldwork protocols and develop evaluation tools
  • Work with project coordinator to do purchasing and follow up of project supplies and preparation of project materials
  • Management and maintenance of measurement instruments and related fieldwork material
  • Support proposal development for future projects
  • Assist in literature searches and compilation of reports
  • Assist in the design and preparation of presentations related to the projects
  • Provide general administrative support to projects including scheduling and preparation of events and meetings
  • Attend meetings with project partners including taking of meeting minutes
