75% of our health depends on factors related to the environment in which we develop our lives.

There are many aspects of the urban environment that have an impact on health: green areas (their location, size, vegetation and their connection to the city), mobility, local services, facilities, business, quality of public space, affordable housing, etc. All of these issues affect health issues such as cardiovascular or respiratory disease, depression, and emotional well-being.

Scientific evidence clearly recognizes the influence of environmental quality on our health. Factors such as air quality, acoustic and light quality, and the green and blue of cities affect our physical and emotional health. Also, some urban environments promote sedentary lifestyles, which contribute to health problems such as obesity, while other environments facilitate active mobility or contact with nature. In addition, science tells us that the origin of some emerging pathogens comes from environmental degradation and that the loss of biodiversity increases the risk and incidence of some infectious diseases.

The global pandemic has made us reflect on the essence of our habitats and has highlighted shortcomings in our cities and urban environments. Now, thinking about urban planning priorities seems more relevant than ever, and incorporating a health perspective into cities is becoming essential. The relationship between health and the urban environment is broad and requires a multidisciplinary approach. In this context, urban planning, as a transversal discipline, becomes the main tool for the incorporation of health in the global planning of the city.
