The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institute addressing global public health challenges through research, translation into policy and education. ISGlobal has a broad portfolio in communicable and non-communicable diseases including environmental and climate determinants, and applies a multidisciplinary scientific approach ranging from the molecular to the population level. Research is organized in three main areas, Malaria and other Infectious Diseases, Child and Maternal Health, and Urban Health, Climate & Non-Communicable Diseases. ISGlobal is accredited with the Severo Ochoa distinction, a seal of excellence of the Spanish Science Ministry.
The BiSC project (www.projectebisc.org) is a new generation cohort lead by the Childhood and Environment Programme (https://www.isglobal.org/en/-/salud-infantil). In BiSC, we have assessed prenatal exposure to several environmental factors (including air pollution and noise), behavior/lifestyle and health of pregnant women and fetal and postnatal development. We have also collected a number of biological samples from the mother, father and child, including saliva, blood, urine, hair, nails, meconium, stool, vaginal swabs, placenta, cord blood. We are a very active team of more than 20 researchers and technicians, including data scientists, health professionals, biologist, epidemiologists and psychologists. The BiSC team is co-lead by five PIs (Jordi Sunyer, Payam Dadvand, Maria Foraster, Ioar Rivas and Mireia Gascon) and one staff scientist, Mariona Bustamante.
