ISGlobal – Barcelona Institute for Global Health is a research center in international health whose ultimate goal is to help close the gaps in health disparities between and within different regions of the world. For this, we engage in knowledge generation, translation and implementation. ISGlobal is a WHO Collaborating Center for Malaria Control, Elimination and Eradication.  

The Manhiça Health Research Centre (CISM), established in 1996 and represented by the Fundação Manhiça, a legal Mozambican entity established in 2008, aims at conducting and promoting health research in national priority health areas to safeguard the health of the most vulnerable populations.

THE PROJECT

BOHEMIA is a Unitaid funded, 4-year project that combines evidence generation and stakeholder engagement to create an enabling environment for ivermectin as a first-in-class endectocide for malaria prevention. This will be achieved by generating evidence to support a WHO policy recommendation, briefing and engagement of country and regional leaders and civil society in order to forge country ownership and create demand, as well as ensuring supply of quality product by enabling manufacturer engagement as suppliers of quality, high volume/low-cost product sufficient for malaria indication.

Evidence generation will consist of two independently powered cluster-randomized clinical trials in Tanzania and Mozambique with analysis of impact on malaria infection incidence, as well as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) including scabies, head lice and tungiasis. The overall goal is to advance the development of a complementary vector control strategy to reduce malaria transmission.

THE POSITION

ISGlobal and CISM are looking a dermatologist or senior dermatology resident interested in collaborating with the BOHEMIA clinical trial, to be conducted in Mopeia, Mozambique.  

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Become thoroughly familiar with the protocol, case report form, informed consent, source documentation, patient diary (when applicable), study medication(s) and SOPs for the clinical trial. Particularly with those aspects related to the diagnosis of NTDs. 
  • Contribute to the training of field workers in what relates to diagnosis of NTDs particularly scabies. Generate the appropriate visual support and training materials.
  • Provide training to the local medical staff on diagnosis and treatment of NTDs, particularly scabies. Validate the diagnosis of scabies and other NTDs done by the study clinicians.
  • Conduct study visits accompanying field workers during the mass drug administration phase of the study and obtain an independent expert diagnosis of NTDs to validate field workers assessments.  
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of participants, employees and ISGlobal-CISM institutional information at all times 
  • Work with the ISGlobal PI, CSO, Country PI, and Mopeia Study Clinician to maintain high quality and participant safety in relationship with NTDs 
  • Provided advice to the physicians addressing dermatological conditions at the local district hospital and health post. 
  • Organize an introductory workshop for the district’s community health workers (APEs)
  • Identify key dermatological issues at the district level and propose practical methods to address them as well as relevant research questions. There is an opportunity to conduct research work on identified issues relevant for the community. Depending on the nature of the ideas, additional ethical clearance might be needed. 
  • To assess a sub-sample of photographs from skin lesions taken by field workers and determine possible referrals should this component of the study be approved. 
  • Have the opportunity to participate in relevant publications arising from this work and contribute to write-up and analysis is desired. 

Required qualifications

  • Specialty in Dermatology or senior resident
  • Experience with diagnosis and management of scabies 
  • Current GCP certification (online course is appropriate)
  • Practical knowledge of regulated clinical trials 
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Ability to develop training materials and facilitate training workshops on scabies and other district specific dermatology conditions. 

Required personal and interpersonal skills

  • Willingness to live in Mopeia (Mozambique) during 2-3 months, starting right after randomization. Approximately January 2022. There is some flexibility around dates.
  • Results-oriented approach to problem solving.
  • Accustomed to teamwork and willingness to contribute to elements outside the clinical trial scope.

 

Not-required assets

  • Previous experience in rural settings in developing countries 
  • Knowledge of Portuguese 

Conditions

  • There will be a Q&A session via TC two weeks after issuing of this opening.

  • This position is based in Zambezia-Mozambique for at least two months.

  • ISGlobal, though the BOHEMIA project, will cover all costs of travel, lodging, vaccines and prophylaxis, insurance and visa as well as a small compensation for locally incurred subsistence expenses.
