The research led by Dr Oriol Mitjà stimulated the World Health Organization (WHO) to launch a campaign to eradicate yaws, which is a neglected tropical disease that affects 40 million people worldwide, by 2020. The strategy for achieving this goal –the Morges strategy– involves a mass drug administration. It means that the antibiotic azithromycin must be given to all the communities affected by yaws, even people that have no symptoms.

Dr Oriol Mitjà will give this joint seminar on this issue, organized by ISGlobal and Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, on 8 February. Dr Antoni Castells, Medical Director of the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, and Dr Antoni Plasència, Director General of ISGlobal, will moderate the session.
