The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institute addressing global public health challenges through research, translation into policy and education. ISGlobal has a broad portfolio in communicable and non-communicable diseases including environmental and climate determinants, and applies a multidisciplinary scientific approach ranging from the molecular to the population level. Research is organized in five programs: Climate, Air Pollution, Nature and Urban Health; Environment and Health over the Lifecourse; Global Viral and Bacterial Infections; Malaria and Neglected Parasitic Diseases and Maternal Child and Reproductive Health. ISGlobal and the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona are looking for a candidate research physician with expertise in clinical research. This position is ideal for a candidate looking for a joint position combining both clinical work and research in international health. The candidate should also be willing to travel.

What We Are Looking for

The candidate will be part of the clinical team working at the International Health Department in the Hospital Clinic and work nationally and internationally on the diagnosis and management of tropical diseases.

The candidate will engage, lead and collaborate in research activities in the field of international health, particularly in the area of helminth infections building on existing collaborations with partners in LMIC. Responsibilities include developing strategic research questions, applying for and procuring research grants, designing and implementing research protocols, supervising PhD students, summarizing findings and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals, and assuming general responsibility for scientific leadership. 

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Attend patients in Hospital Clinic’s Travel Clinic, and when needed in health facilities located in countries in Sub Saharan Africa or Latin America.
  • Lead the design and development of strategic research projects including clinical studies (epidemiologic and clinical trials) and obtain grant funding in the field of Neglected Tropical Diseases.
  • Lead the activities of research studies, particularly clinical trials, including ensuring all study procedures are of good quality and are carried out per good clinical practices. 
  • Publish scientific manuscripts in international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Supervise personnel to coordinate research efforts for increased efficiency; participate in the training of pre-doctoral fellows, residents, students, and volunteer workers as needed.

Experience and training

Essential Requirements:

  • Medical Doctor.
  • Experience in the preparation and execution of research studies, particularly clinical trials.
  • Experience and knowledge on issues related to Global Health. 
  • Expertise in epidemiology, Neglected Tropical Diseases or related fields will be highly evaluated 
  • Additional profiles will be considered if highly motivated researchers in other related disciplines.

Desirable: 

  • PhD 
  • Previous experience conducting clinical trials according to ICH-GCP. 
  • Practical experience in health research in low-resources settings. 
  • Record of obtaining research funding and publishing in peer-reviewed journals
     

Languages and others

  • Fluent in English
  • Spanish proficiency.
  • Availability to travel.

Salary and conditions

  • The conditions will be agreed according to training and experience. Approximate start-date in May 2024.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process is designed in two phases:
1- Interview phase of a technical nature, with the team that requires the incorporation. To assess the person's skills and CV.
2 - Meeting with HR with the finalist(s) to finish assessing the profile and discuss contractual and institutional issues.
If needed any technical test could be pass. A Psychological Competency Evaluation Test will be required for the structural or transversal positions.
In accordance with the OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for every vacancy at the beginning of the process. After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will start the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview. A profile questionnaire as well as a technical exercise may be required during the process.
