Bacterial resistance to antimicrobial drugs is a serious problem in many respects: it threatens our ability to treat infectious diseases, increases health costs, and poses a serious risk to the progress made in global health by individuals and communities in the past decades. Infections caused by multidrug resistant bacteria are globally recognized as an emergent disease and antimicrobial resistance is a priority for global health action as declared by institutions such as the World Health Organization and the European Centre for Diseases Control.

When resistance to first-line drugs increases, infections last longer and become more expensive to treat, with hospitalization required in many cases. To fight antimicrobial resistance we need to promote innovation, research and the development of new tools.

This B·Debate, a joint initiative of Biocat and Obra Social “la Caixa”, is co-organized with the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) in order to:

  • offer an overview of the current research strategies that are being developed
  • identify the success and limitations of the different research lines
  • discuss how the future in antimicrobial drug discovery looks like
  • identify the interventions that are currently taken and should be carried out in terms of policies to stimulate research in this field and implement measures to tackle antimicrobial resistance.
