The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institute addressing global public health challenges through research, translation into policy and education. ISGlobal has a broad portfolio in communicable and non-communicable diseases including environmental and climate determinants, and applies a multidisciplinary scientific approach ranging from the molecular to the population level. Research is organized in the following main areas, Malaria and other Infectious Diseases, Maternal, Child and reproductive Health, Urban Health and Child and environmental health, Climate & Non-Communicable Diseases.  ISGlobal is accredited with the Severo Ochoa distinction, a seal of excellence of the Spanish Science Ministry.

What We Are Looking For

ISGlobal is seeking a Postdoctoral researcher who is interested in investigating the potential health effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) on fetal and children’s development. This work will be part of several international projects led by ISGlobal including Expo-ENFANTS (Characterisation of uses and real and cumulative exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields from mobile communicating devices in children of different ages) and EMBRYORAD (Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, other environmental factors, and development of the embryo and the fetus) funded by ANSES (grant agreements EST-19 RF-04 and EST-18 RF-25), and GOLIAT (5G exposure, causal effects, and risk perception through citizen engagement) funded by Horizon Europe (grant agreement 101057262).
Much research has taken plane in recent decades concerning exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields and assessment of its potential effects on health. While no detrimental effect of the low levels of RF-EMF commonly used in telecommunication has been demonstrated, epidemiological studies have suggested that RF-EMF may have effects on the fetal development and on neuropsychological functions including cognitive function, mental health, and sleep. The number of RF-EMF sources and their use in our general environment continue to grow and keep evolving with the introduction of new generation communication technologies such as 5G, there is the need to continue evaluating the potential risks that this exposure may pose to human health.
The candidate will closely work with an international team of lead experts on RF-EMF exposure and health effects. The candidate will gain skills in environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment, birth cohort studies, and statistical methods.
