Descripción

The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institute addressing global public health challenges through research, translation into policy and education. ISGlobal has a broad portfolio in communicable and non-communicable diseases including environmental and climate determinants, and applies a multidisciplinary scientific approach ranging from the molecular to the population level. Research is organized in the following main areas, Urban Health and Child and environmental health, Climate & Non-Communicable Diseases, Malaria and other Infectious Diseases, Maternal, Child and reproductive Health.  ISGlobal is accredited with the Severo Ochoa distinction, a seal of excellence of the Spanish Science Ministry.

The projects:

This position will be funded by European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement 101081728 (intoDBP project: Innovative tools to control organic matter and disinfection by-products in drinking water) and Grant Agreement 101095430 (MARCHES project: Methodologies for assessing the real costs to health of environmental stressors).

What We Are Looking for

We are seeking a candidate with a strong focus on environmental epidemiology and exposure science, particularly in the field of drinking water chemical quality. The candidate will contribute to the intoDBP objectives: increase the understanding of human DBP exposure in European populations. Specifically, i) describe personal behaviour leading to DBP exposure, ii) identify patterns of occurrence of emerging DBPs, and iii) assess the links between DBP concentrations and extreme weather events. In the MARCHES project, the candidate will contribute to a systematic review of drinking water nitrate and health effects to produce exposure-response functions, and other related tasks such as consultation with stakeholders.

Field research

  • Exposure science
  • Environmental epidemiology
  • Chemistry
  • Computer science
  • Statistics

Training and experience:

Master in Public Health, Doctoral degree in environmental epidemiology, exposure science or related fields. Experience in water exposures and statistical methods will be considered an asset. In the case of Master Degree candidates, a PhD in the framework of the project could be considered, conditioned to the availability of adequate funds. In both cases, the candidate is expected to lead and/or participate in scientific publications.

Key Responsibilities

The candidate will be involved in a range of research activities. The main ones will be the coordination of an international survey in Ireland, Cyprus and Barcelona about water use habits, and their determinants, including water-related believes and risk perception. This will require the design of a common questionnaire in coordination with the research teams. Other tasks will include analysis of epidemiological data to describe drinking water exposures and the main determinants; ascertain data on drinking water quality and climate variables from public databases; statistical analysis of the relationship between disinfection by-product concentrations and weather variables/extreme weather events; modelling of DBP concentrations to predict emerging DBPs based on regulated DBPs; participate in a systematic review of nitrate in drinking water and related health effects, in coordination with other international teams. The workplan will be defined with the principal investigator based on the deliverables of the funded projects.
