The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institution addressing global and public health challenges through research, innovation, translation into policy and education. It is the result of a private-public partnership involving highly reputed academic, public administration and philanthropic institutions. ISGlobal has a broad research portfolio in communicable and non-communicable diseases including environmental and climate determinants of health, and applies a multidisciplinary scientific approach ranging from the molecular to the population level. Research is organised in the following five programmes: Malaria and neglected parasitic diseases; Maternal, Child and reproductive Health; Global Viral and Bacterial Infections; Climate, air pollution, nature and urban health; and Environment and health over the lifecourse. ISGlobal is a private center promoted by “la Caixa” Foundation and takes part in the CERCA system of the Generalitat of Catalunya. It is accredited with the Severo Ochoa distinction, a seal of excellence from the Spanish Science Ministry, strengthening cross-cutting frontier methodological capabilities in areas of Data sciences, Health Impact Assessment and eHealth.This call for applications is aimed at the selection of the best candidate for the position of Director General of ISGlobal, and is open to candidates worldwide including those who are currently or have been researchers at ISGlobal.

Director General’s profile
The Director General reports to the Board of Trustees and its Executive Commission, and is in charge of executive functions within the organisation. He/she is supported by strong management, scientific, knowledge transfer, global policy and development, education and training, communication and internal service departments. ISGlobal’s Director General leads the institution by managing the human, scientific and financial resources to fulfil its institutional mission. Working both with internal and external constituencies, the Director General provides overall leadership and guidance for the institute. He/she is expected to further the mission of the institute and to exercise broad responsibility for the scientific, translational, academic, financial, philanthropic and all other dimensions of the institution.
The qualities being sought in the Director General include outstanding scientific vision, integrity, communication skills, administrative abilities, energy and motivation, fundraising experience, consensus building capacity, and a leadership style that engenders and nurtures trust and respect. The Director General will have a distinguished record of scientific excellence, leadership, experience and capacity for team management in the context of large and diverse organisations. He/she will embrace the values of rigour, diversity, empathy and service, and will aim to provide inspiration to all colleagues, which include faculty members, staff and students. He/she will have in-depth knowledge of both national and international research and translational ecosystems including Low and Middle Income Countries and with a particular focus on public and private international and European programmes.
The new Director General will be appointed for an initial period of 5 years, which can be extended for additional periods of equal duration. Salary and benefits will follow ISGlobal standards.
Applicant´s profile:
- PhD degree in the biomedical field or in any global health-related knowledge area. MD will be considered a plus.
- Distinguished record and international reputation of scientific excellence.
- Demonstrated experience and capacity of excellence in scientific and translational leadership and team management.
- Demonstrated research management experience and innovative thinking required to lead a world-class organization.
- Demonstrated knowledge of strategic planning and resource allocation.
- Capacity to represent the institute in all types of political, academic, industrial and social environments.
- Demonstrated experience in managing international research and translation activities and partnerships.
- Outstanding communication skills and fluency in ISGlobal communication languages
- A strong and firm belief in ISGlobal’s vision, mission and values.
- Ability to align multiple stakeholders in diverse institutional settings, including the international, European, Spanish and Catalan contexts.
Job description
By and large, the Director General duties are set by ISGlobal’s bylaws and by the responsibilities entrusted to the Director General by the Board of Trustees. They include:
a) To administer, manage and carry out the Foundation's activities.
b) To propose strategies and plans for actions, operations, costs and financing sources to the Board of Trustees.
c) To legally represent the Foundation in all types of acts, in accordance with the terms and conditions determined by the Board of Trustees.
d) To propose the Foundation's annual budget.
e) To coordinate the actions aimed at obtaining the required resources to achieve the Foundation's purpose.
f) To report to the Board of Trustees on the progress made in the research activities and programmes, costs and sources of funding.
g) To act as a contracting body according to the terms and conditions stipulated by the Board of Trustees.
h) To supervise the process of selecting personnel for the Foundation.
i) To ensure the correct implementation of the Foundation's programmes and activities,
j) To propose collaboration and cooperation agreements with private or public institutions to the Board of Trustees.
k) Participate in relevant governing bodies as assigned by the Board of Trustees.
l) Directing, organizing, managing, executing and inspecting the research, training and internal organization of the institute, reporting to he Board.
m) Defining in close collaboration with the Scientific Director the overall scientific and technological vision for the institute.
n) Providing guidance to all members of the institute, specially to the knowledge transfer, academic and technical departments of the institute.
o) Leading strategic actions aimed at obtaining the resources necessary for the institute's objectives to be achieved.
p) Organising scientific assessments for the institute as a whole and for individual personnel, as appropriate.
q) Leading the evaluations of the center, including CERCA evaluations, and keeping I-CERCA informed about the results and progress.
r) Being the main contact point with the Scientific Advisory Board of the institute.
s) Any other duties that may be expressly assigned to him/her by the Executive Committee or the Board of Trustees.
