Medida y efecto de la dieta en la evolución de la Enfermedad Pulmonar Obstructiva Crónica (EPOC)

Objectives:

(i) To describe the dietary habits of a sample of Spanish patients with COPD, (ii) to estimate the cross-sectional and longitudinal association between diet components and clinical variables and the course of COPD, and (iii) to validate the diet questionnaire.



Subjects:

275 patients with COPD (68 years old, 53%FEV1), from the PAC-EPOC cohort.



Methods:

A validated questionnaire on the frequency of food consumption (122 questions) and a Spanish food composition table were used to estimate nutrient intake. Its adequacy was evaluated using the recommendations of the Spanish Society of Nutrition for the elderly. Information on nutritional state, inflammation and oxidative stress, exercise capacity and muscle strength was obtained from the PACEPOC general study. Diet biomarkers in serum were measured.



Results:

Consumption of foods from the main food groups and nutrient intake were adequate, except in the case of vitamin D, which was slightly lower than the recommended intake (4.5μg/d) (from Batlle 2009, Respir Med). An inverse association was found between vitamin E intake and serum carbonyl levels (p=0.031), as well as between olive oil and GSH levels (p=0.036) (article currently under development). The questionnaire is currently being validated based on serum biomarkers (beta-carotene and vitamin E). Future patient follow-up will enable the completion of the study’s objectives within the next two years.



Conclusions: Spanish patients with COPD follow an adequate diet. The study will provide relevant information on the role of diet in the course of COPD.
